Aka Bare Knuckle 2, it still remains one of the
best side scrolling beat’em up ever created.
SoR2 is very similar to its predecessor, but
it’s far superior in every its aspect.
The story: a year has passed since three young
vigilantes, Axel, Adam and Blaze, defeated Mr X, an evil syndicate boss, and
the city is now peaceful and free; but when Axel hears the sworn enemy is still
active and powerful, and he kidnapped Adam, he immediately comes back in
action.
The mission: defeating once and for all Mr X
and rescuing Adam, got imprisoned.
Gameplay is totally renewed and improved: first
of all, special move is no longer a police car launching a smart bomb
decimating all of the enemies, but each character can perform two special
attacks consuming health but very powerful and spectacular.
They are Axel, Blaze and newcomers Max Thunder
(a powerful pro-wrestler) and Skate Hunter, Adam’s kid brother; each one owns a
particular combat style, and the number of combos and fighting techniques has
been improved and increased, by pressing the jump, attack and directional
buttons.
Enemies are tough and often they are so many at
the same time that you’d better slash’em with a katana, if you got one, or stay
in a corner and wait for them.
Sometimes the four characters can be equipped
with weapons found on the ground or grabbed from a foe; there are knives, iron
pipes, grenades, a ninja knife, and the devastating katana.
Music are simply unforgettable: they change for
any location of the adventure and can be more dramatic, more creepy (like in
the Amusement Park final stage…) or more rocking, but they are always perfect
for any situation.
Graphics have been incredibly improved in comparison of the first SoR, although backgrounds are basically the ones already seen in the first episode (the downtown streets, the bridge being constructed, the amusement park, the stadium, a boat, the jungle, a military facility, Mr X’ headquarter) but they are very more detailed, and colours are more brilliant.
Characters are as well less raw, they move fluently
and naturally, in a convincing way and it’s possible to notice many expressions
and sentiments on their faces.
Playing alone SoR2 is funny but with a friend
it gets fantastic.
As additional mode you can play the Duel mode:
two players against each other.
I spent a lot of time playing SoR2 and
sometimes I still play it: old school rocks!
Every Sega Genesis fan should have played it!
